Alexander Aljechin föddes 31 oktober 1892
i Moskva, han avled den 25 mars 1946 i Estoril, Portugal. Aljechin ligger
begravd på Montparnasse begravningsplats i Paris. Där ligger också
hans hustru Grace (Wishar) begravd. Grace avled 1956.
Monumentet restes den 23 mars 1956 på initiativ av FIDE i närvaro
av bl.a. FIDEs president Foke Rogard, vicepresidenterna Vetschslav Ragozin
(Sovjetunionen) och Marcel Bergman (Frankrike), liksom ledamöterna i FIDEs
presidium Gian Carlo dal Vermo (Italien) och Pierre Dierman (Belgien)
samt världsmästaren Michail Botvinnik.
Den 26 december 1999 förstördes graven under ett rasande oväder.
Enligt fransk lagstiftning skall anhöriga bära de ekonomiska
kostnaderna för en restaurering. Närmast anhörig är
en son bosatt i USA.
Det var länge oklart hur finansieringen av renoveringen skulle ordnas.

Dear Friends,
Rehabilitation of the grave of World Champion Alexander Alekhine
Thanks to the work of Mr. Egon Ditt, President of the German Chess
Federation, and Mr. Gerald Fischer, also of the same Federation, we wish
to draw attention to the current state of disrepair of the tomb of the
legendary Alexander Alekhine, World Chess Champion 1927-1935, 1937-1946.
Reports reaching us, indicate the urgent need for the tomb of World
Champion Alekhine to be rehabilitated. The cost for the rehabilitation
of this tomb is now estimated at USD 22.000 (Twenty two thousand dollars).
We request donations from members of the world chess fraternity
to contribute to the rebuilding of this chess monument located at the
Montparnase Cemetery in Paris.

It should be recalled that under the Presidency of the late Folke
Rogard, FIDE decided in 1956 to relocate the grave of World Champion Alekhine
from Portugal to Paris. In our coming Congress in Istanbul, a proposal
shall be put before General Assembly on the setting up of a Special Committee
on burial sites of our great player's for decoration and upkeep in honour
of our common Chess heritage.
